Frank Freeland Farrand was born in Manhattan, New York in 1908. He was the youngest of three sons of Frank Farrand and Helena Willett Alger, his older brothers being Carl Alger Farrand (a/k/a Charles Alger Farrand) and Palmer Chatterton Farrand. When his mother Helena died May 3rd of 1929 his 62 year old father soon married again (to a woman about 25 years his junior) and had another son William Frank Farrand who was born on the 4th of July.

His baptismal picture was taken at Hudson, New York. Both of his two older brothers were born in Hudson, New York and baptized at Christ Episcopal Church at Hudson, New York. I found a record of their baptisms but not that of my father in the church records but my best guess is that there was an oversight in the records there or I just failed to find the entry since his baptismal picture was taken at Hudson.

My dad Frank Freeland Farrand spent part of his life in the Dominican Republic, West Indies where his father managed a series of sugar plantations. His mother spent part of each year in Hudson, New York and later parts of each year at Essex County, New Jersey. Dad's mother would come North during the rainy season and return to Santo Domingo during the dry season. She inherited a 1/3 interest in a beautiful house on Allen Street in Hudson in 1897 which was sold in 1910 and by 1912 she and my grandfather owned another beautiful house at 222 Roseland Avenue in Essex Fells, Essex County, New Jersey which is now #228. Neither house was lived in by the family on a continuous basis because of my grandfather's job out of the country.

Frank Freeland Farrand was forced by a series of family tragedies to leave high school early and at the age of 17 years secured a very good job with the Bowery Savings Bank in Manhattan where he worked for 42 years before he took early retirement.

When Dad married my mother, Isabelle Susan Bilger, on February 2, 1935 at Grace Lutheran Church in Astoria, he went to live in an apartment in a house owned by her family.

Dad was related to two U. S. Presidents through his father's mother, Helen Peake, who was the second wife of the English born Joseph Steevens Farrand, Sr. (Millard Fillmore and Franklin Pierce)- and two U. S. Presidents through his mother's mother, Helena Willett Freeland, who was the wife of Charles Alger. Those presidents were Martin Van Buren and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was also related to Eliza Kortright, the wife of President James Monroe through his mother's mother.

Also buried at this cemetery are my mother and two of her sisters (Ruth Bilger Hill and Marie Bilger Hogencamp). After many years of studying genealogy after retiring from teaching, I learned that my father and Rockwell Kenneth Hill, the husband of my mother's youngest sister Ruth, had common ancestors Ignatius Jourdaine, Sr. (1561 - 1640) and his second wife, Elizabeth Baskerville, of Exeter, Devonshire, England. Ignatius held positions such as mayor of Exeter and a Member of Parliament and was an influential Puritan leader. He was also bailiff of a local castle through right of his second wife.

My dad was an excellent men's doubles tennis player along with his friend William Helmus and they took many a title at games sponsored by the Bowery Savings Bank. My father, Frank, was also a good bridge player, liked to read mystery novels, and was interested in historical events. He is buried at the Laurel Hill Cemetery at White Sulphur Springs, Sullivan County, New York. The cemetery is high on a wind-swept hill and the view of the surrounding area is breathtaking for visitors.

I had a very strong father-daughter bond with my father. I am a lot like him.
