Presidential Cabinet Member. While working as a businessman, he studied and graduated from Dickinson College Pennsylvania, in 1848. After graduation, he served as adjunct Professor of Ancient Languages at Dickinson College, (1848-50) and as a full Professor of Ancient Languages chairmanship, (1850-61). With the advent of the Civil War, he was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln United States Consul to England, serving (1861-65). In 1869, he was appointed by President Ulysses S, Grant the First Assistant Postmaster General, serving until 1874. In 1874, when Postmaster General John Creswell resigned from office, James Marshall took the place as the 24th U.S. Postmaster General, serving July 3, 1874-August 24, 1874. When Marshall Jewels was appointed the new Postmaster General, James Marshall resumed his position as First Assistant Postmaster General, serving until 1877. After leaving office, he was appointed General Superintendent of the Railway Mail Service, serving until he retired from political life in 1880.
