Obit: NALS 27 Jan 1873 p4 c4: Crawford County Items. Death of an Old Citizen.--James Bowman, an old resident of this county, and an honored and respected citizen, died at his residence in Whisky Run township, yesterday morning. He served in the war of 1812 with honor to himself and credit to his country, having fought under Gen. Jackson in the memorable battle of New Orleans, on that 8th day of January, 1815, and was a monument of industry and integrity among his fellow men up to the day of his deaths. Peace be to the ashes of "Uncle Jimmie" as he was familiarly called died at his residence in Whiskey Run Twp., this County, Jan. 21st 1873. He was born in Jefferson Co., Ky., Mar. 1796, remaining there until 1811 when he removed to Indiana, he returned to Louisville, Ky. and enlisted in the U.S.A. He passed through the war of 1812 unscratched participating in the battle of New Orleans in 1815, under General Jackson. After peace had been declared he again returned to Indiana in 1817 passing through the Indian Nation on his way home.
This time he settled in Crawford County and was soon united in marriage to Miss Lydia Springer, who was to be his helpmate for a long and useful life. He was the father of fourteen children, the grandfather of fifty-five and the great-grandfather of 25. In 1845 he united with the M.E. Church, and up to the day of his death was a zealous and consistent member. He was a regular attendant upon the duties of the church, and from its teachings derived that hope of blessed immortality which made his last days his best. When he was called to join the innumerable hosts above, his eyes closed in a beautiful sleep, and his soul departed to the God who gave it, and to the happiness that awaits the true Christian beyond this vail of tears. In the death of "Uncle Jimmie" our country sustains the loss of one of its oldest and best citizens, and his family loses a kind father and a noble husband.
