Confederate veteran. Son of William and Sarah Osborn Sturgil. Spent boyhood in Kentucky and North Carolina. Enlisted at Abingdon, Virginia, in the spring of 1861. In battles at Piedmont, Lynchburg, 2nd Winchester, and Frederick City. Captured at Moorefield, Virginia, on August 7, 1864, and served as a POW at Camp Chase, Ohio. Released in March, 1865 in Nashville and "nearly beat to death by a mob of Yankees that didn't like my uniform." Wife was Mary Ann McKendrie Smith (1870). Was a blacksmith and railroad construction worker for 19 years. Moved to East Chattanooga in 1898, and was employed by Chattanooga Implement Company until 1919. Was a U.S. Deputy Marshal for 6 years. Baptist faith. Died at his home on Searle Street.
