Eugene "Gene" Fields was born on June 24, 1919 in Franklin, Louisiana to Edward and Cecil Fields.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mamie G. Fields; his parents, Edward Fields and Cecil Pinell Fields; brothers, Lee Fields, Edward "Pep" Fields, Enoch "Boo" Fields, and Arron "Joe" Fields; sisters, Daisy Borel, Birdie Letulle, Ivy Mae Christly, Irene Mable Jolet, Cecil Grantham, Lilly Hoyt and Ethel Craig; as well as his son-in-law, Gerald James Duhon.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Carolyn) Duhon and one son, Carl Joseph Fields both of Moss Bluff; grandsons, Robbie Duhon of Moss Bluff, Gene Duhon of Midland, Michigan; granddaughter, Mrs. Shannon Leubner and husband, Wayne of Moss Bluff; three great grandchildren, Robin Duhon of Midland, Michigan, Trevor Duhon of Lake Charles, Alexis "Lexie" Lasher of Moss Bluff as well as two foster great grandchildren, Derick and Travis Stringer of Shreveport.

He was known as "Poppie" by all who knew and loved him. He also leaves behind very special friends, Percy and Virgina Thibodeaux, Greg, Lisa, Catlin and Jousha Lalande, Carolyn and Rachel Rachael, all of Moss Bluff. They were considered "family" rather than just friends. They were always a great comfort and help to him and his family.
He was an avid gardener and loved to share his crops with everyone. He loved having his great grandchildren and neighborhood children around to help in the garden, to bake, cook or teach them something his mother had taught him.

He was a member of St. Theodore Catholic Church, Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 106 and Pipeline Local 798.
He was proud to have served in the United States Navy as a Petty Officer 3rd Class on the USS Missoula APA 211 which was in the Pacific Campaign, including the Battles of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. His job was to drive a landing craft to transport the troops and equipment onto the beach. The 1st Flag raised on Mt. Suribachi came from his boat group P27 assigned to the USS, Missoula. It was later replaced with the larger flag as represented in the Iwo Jima Monument.

His funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2011 at St. Theodore's Catholic Church. Visitation will be at Hixson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff, Thursday 3-10 p.m. with rosary at 6 p.m. and resuming Friday 8 a.m. til the time of service. Msgr. Charles DuBois will officiate.
