FAIRMONT — John D. Bonfantino, 87, of Fairmont, died Tuesday morning (April 26, 2011) at Fairmont General Hospital.

He was born on June 24, 1923, in New York City, son of the late John and Mary Blumetto Bonfantino.

John retired from Bethlehem Steel and after retirement he worked for Rauer Coal Co. He also had worked for his father when he was younger at John the Tailor that was located in town.

John was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus council No. 942. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, watching sports and visiting his friends at the Belmont and in Jane Lew, and also enjoyed visiting his niece, Marlene and Stanley Gaston.

John was a loving and devoted husband to his late wife, Elsie Jean Bonfantino, whom he loved with all his heart.

John is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Linda Bonfantino of Fairmont; and five grandchildren, Jason, John Christopher Bonfantino, Beth Ann Williams, Lisa Hayes and Aaran Priester. He is also survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Leonard "Lenny" and Linda Bonfantino of Monongah; and two sisters, Theresa Domico of Monongah and Rosemary Newbrough of New Jersey. He is also survived by several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Jean Bonfantino, on Sept. 2, 1998; one son, John Michael Bonfantino; and one brother, Alfred "Alfie" Bonfantino.

Friends may call at Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont, from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from noon to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Maryland Avenue with Father Richard Ulam, O.S.B., as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
