In 1872 Joseph Reeder began working at the Kelly Furnace in Marion County where he was assistant founder until the furnace went out of blast in June of 1877. He then worked with Clark & Boice Lbr. Co. operating his own sawmills in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas, furnishing them logs until 1896 at which time Clark & Boice discontinued operating their mill,, and J.R. Hedges acquired 2767 acres of land in Cass County and other properties in Marion and Dallas Counties under judgement against Clark & Boice for services rendered and money loaned them.
In 1908 the Hedges family moved to Cass County, settling in the Bear Creek Community, 5 miles S.W. Linden, where he continued operating his Mill and Blacksmith shop along with farming.
Joseph Redder learned the Iron works from his father who followed the trade in Adams & Gallia Counties, Ohio & Crawford County, Missouri where he went with Massies of Chillicothe about 1825 and helped build and operate the Massie Iron Works & Grist Mill. The Massies had taken Susan Wisecup when she was quite young and raised her, after her mother died.
None of the children of J. R. and Julia ever went to public school, but all received a good education as Mr. Hedges always had a school on the mill ground for his children and the children of the mill workers. The teacher boarded in the Hedges home free and her salary was paid by Mr. Hedges.
