U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in the courts of Kentucky and Tennessee. He was a member of the Tennessee State Senate, (1843-47) and was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-second and Thirty-third Congresses, serving (1851-55). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as Clerk of the United States House of Representatives for the Thirty-fourth Congress, (1856-57). He was on the staff for the office of the United States Attorney General, (1873-78), also served as a judge in Clinton, Tennessee and practiced law until his death at age 86.
