William was the oldest of seven children born to Mary Jane Benton and Thomas McDonough Grant. In 1868 he graduated from Bellvue Medical Hospital College in New York. On October 16, 1878 he married Mary Adaline Moseley in Williamson County, TN. William became a physician and by 1885 had moved to Davenport, IA to practice medicine. He had been appointed Surgeon of the United States Arsenal in Rock Island. He and Addie had two sons: William West, Jr. and James A. In 1888 Addie died. William remarried in 1895 to Anna Craig Green. By 1900, William moved his family to Denver where he held the position of Major to the Medical Reserve Corps at Ft. Logan. He remained in Denver until his death in 1934.
