Company A was conducting a sweep through Phuoc Thoi village in Hieu Duc District when they were engaged by a large NVA force. Fire from machine-guns raked the Marines as they maneuvered towards the camouflaged and hidden enemy positions. When the fire fight was finally terminated, four Marines lay dead, one of whom was killed by friendly fire, and several had been wounded.
One of the casualties was PFC Wells who died as a result of enemy gunshot wounds.
* PFC Wells was presented with the NAVY COMMENDATION MEDAL with Combat "V" posthumously "For meritorious service ....from 15 January to 25 February 1969...."
