GEORGE A. BARKER

Mr. George A. Barker, who had been a resident of this place for many years, died on Thursday forenoon, March 12, 1931, at 8:45 o'clock, in this city at the home of his daughter, Mrs. L. O. Atha, on Franklin avenue, after an illness of about three weeks with pleural pneumonia.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Arthur K. Jones, were held at the Nazarene church on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, after which interment took place in the Chariton cemetery, there to await the resurrection.

George Andrew Barker, son of William A. and Ellen Barker, was born in Ohio on January 4, 1849, and at the time of his demise was aged 82 years, 2 months and 8 days.

He was married to Samantha Park on June 22, 1886. To this union three children were born, Mrs. Lula Atha, of Chariton, Mrs. Allie Wise, of Des Moines, and Harley Barker, of Ottumwa, all of whom survive to mourn his departure. He also leaves thirteen grandchildren. Three brothers, John, Charles and David Barker, preceded him in death.

Mr. Barker was a civil war veteran, having entered the service in the union army as a member of Company B, Seventh Cavalry. His death marks the passing of another of the few surviving members of that memorable conflict.

He was heard calling on God in the latter days of his life, and just a few days before his going witnessed to his daughter that he was ready for that home on high. He had many friends here who will be grieved to learn of his passing and who will extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved ones.
