He was the son of Emmitt Alton Bates and Minerva V. "Minnie" Quinn Bates. He married Essie Robinson on November 27 1929 in Amite County, MS (Book 28, Page 141). Essie was the daughter of Walne Eager Robinson and Aire Ann Thomas Robinson. He married Gladys Lucille McKenzie McMillan on August 6, 1975 in Amite County, MS (Book 42, Page 363). Gladys was the widow of Norman Spencer McMillan.
