Peter was the oldest of 15 children born to Pardon Mawney and Experience Gardner of East Greenwich, Rhode Island. Based on the naming history within the family, his middle name was likely LeMoine, the French surname of the family before it was anglicized to Mawney. He married Zeruah PATCHIN, and with her had six known children, all born in New York. According to the obituary of Dr. Billy J. Clark, Peter L. Mawney had a licensed tavern in Moreau, New York. A new temperance society being established by Dr. Clark held its preliminary meeting at this tavern on 13 April 1808. Peter, his wife Zeruah, and five of their six children are buried in this cemetery.
