He was one of the children of Johannes T. Van Deusen and his first wife Christina De La Mater (Le Maistre). Christina was a descendant of Major Dirck Wesselsen Ten Broeck who owned a large tract of land on the east side of the Hudson River near Clermont, New York and a large tract of land at Saratoga, New York.

John J. Van Deusen was born in 1759 and baptized Nov. 14, 1761 at the Dutch Reformed Church of Claverack, Columbia County, New York. He married Fytje (Sophia in English) Hallenbeck on Sept. 30, 1782 at the same church where he was baptized. They were apparently third cousins. Sophia was one of the children of William J. Hallenbeck and Maria-Marya D. Spoor. John J. Van Deusen and Sophia (Fytje) Hallenbeck had eleven children including my ancestor Maria Van Deusen who married Leonard Freeland in 1806 at the same Dutch Reformed Church of Claverack, New York.

John J. Van Deusen died young in 1802 at the age of 42 and his father Johannes T. Van Deusen, married to his second wife, Maritje Bronck of Greene County, died in 1803. The widow Sophia died on December of 1833 at age 70 and she is also buried in the cornfield near Spook Rock in Claverack, New York. John fought in the Revolutionary War as a young man and his father Johannes T. Van Deusen was said to have been Chairman of the Committee for Safety at Claverack, New York during the war.

One of the sources of information for him are in "The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record," Volume XXVI, year 1895, page 90. His wife is also mentioned in the same list of burials at the Van Deusen burial ground opposite "Spook Rock" on the roadside between Claverack and Hudson, Columbia County, New York. The piece of information was supplied by R. J. Van Deusen of Albany, New York.
