He first enlists in Company A, 39th Georgia Infantry Regiment commanded by Col. Alfred Cummings of Cummings Brigade in March 1862. He fought in the Battle of Champions Hill, MS in May 1863. Retreat before Grant's Army back to Vicksburg, MS. Fought in the seige of Vicksburg and is listed as a captured prisoner in July 1863. He is parolled within a few days and his unit is sent back home to Murray Co., GA to await exchange. His unit is exchanged in Sept. 1863 and ordered to report in Oct. 1863. He is transferred into Company E, 3rd Georgia Cavalry in Dec. 1863, probably due to his age. He is captured in Murray Co., GA sometime in Feb. 1864 and is sent to Rock Island Prison Camp.
