Ralph was born in Lee County, IA and grew up on a farm, doing chores before he went to school each morning. He attended a one-room schoolhouse (Bayles) during his elementary years. He graduated from Hillsboro H.S. in 1935. After graduation, he worked in IA as a farmhand for several years before heading out West with his Uncle Donald Mosier. Ralph arrived in Weed, CA Aug. 8, 1937 with $4.50 in his pocket. He worked for over a year as a ranch hand for $1.50 a day, until he landed a job at Mallory Chevrolet in Dec. 1938. After doing cleanup work for a few months, he started doing auto body work and eventually became a full-time body-and-fender man at Mallory. He worked at Mallory Chevrolet for 25 years and in recognition of his committment and quality work, he was awarded a brand new car upon his retirement in 1982.

Ralph met Helen Noreen Coate in Weed and they married Oct. 11, 1940. They had two sons, Edwin and Wayne. After living in Weed, CA for some years, in 1956 they built a house in Mt. Shasta, CA on property with a beautiful view of Mount Shasta. The mountain was a great source of comfort to Ralph and he never tired of looking at it, even in his later years.

Ralph enjoyed many hobbies, including hunting, fishing, gardening, canning, woodworking and lapidary. He also worked with Boy Scout Troop 97 for several years and supported his sons in whatever activities they participated in. He was an active member of the Grace Presbyterian Church in Weed, CA until shortly before his death. Due to severe health problems, he moved to Texas in 2009 to be near son Edwin and family and passed away there in July 2009.
