Casualty of WWII, Edward, aged 30, was a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner with 228 (R.A.F.) Squadron, The Royal New Zealand Air Force;Service No: 405467.
He was the son of William and Mary Catherine Blacklock, of Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.

Mark 3 Sunderland Flying Boat took off from Invergordon, Scotland. About half an hour after take-off, the plane crashed into the side of Eagle's Rock in Caithness, Scotland. The crash was later attributed to pilot error. A memorial cross was erected at the crash site on Eagle's Rock.

Fourteen people died in this accident and one survived. The others who died were:

Royal Personnel:
Air Commodore HRH Prince George, The Duke of Kent (39).His remains were taken initially to Dunrobin Castle at Golspie in Sutherland. Later, they were taken to London for burial.

Three other members of the crew were taken to Oban and laid to rest in Pennyfuir Cemetery.

The sole survivor was:
Sergeant Andrew S.W. Jack, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner
who managed to crawl out of the tangled wreckage and who then staggered around the crash site injured, disorientated and in a state of shock. Ultimately, after about 22 hours, he was seen by a local girl while attempting to get through a farmland gate to find help. The girl led him to the family croft where her mother attended to Sgt Jack's injuries.
Andrew Jack passed away in 1976 of liver failure.
