Former Deputy City Sergeant Succumbs at Residence of Daughter
Samuel Nimmo Charlton, 83, former deputy city sergeant, died last night at 8:50 o'clock at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. David P. Gates, 536 Virginia avenue, Colonial Place, after an illness of two years.
A lifelong resident of Norfolk, Mr. Charlton was the son of the late Samuel Solomon Charlton and Martha Ann Kirby Charlton.
He served as deputy city sergeant for 17 years before retiring in 1938. He was a member of Aerie No. 163, Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Besides his daughter, Mrs. Gates, he is survived by a son, Samuel H. Charlton, also of Norfolk; a sister, Mrs. Edward Day Barker of Colorado Springs, Colo. and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Cox Funeral Home, 631 Westover avenue, at a time to be announced later.

Gates, 536 Virginia avenue, Friday night, will be conducted at the Cox Funeral Home, 631 Westover avenue, at Manteo Street, this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The Rev. L.G. Sturdivant, D.D., pastor of Park Place Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
