Excerpts from obituary printed in the Columbus Junction newspaper.

Hubert D. Gelatt was born in the town of Holland near Buffalo, New York, March 6, 1834, being one of a pair of twins, his mate, Helen, now Mrs. McCrary, of Kansas City, surviving him.

His parents removed to Pennsylvania during his early infancy. In 1840 they moved to Illinois, and a year later to Iowa, settling at Trenton, near Mt. Pleasant, where his early boyhood was spent.

... In 1859 he and his younger brother, Wallace, crossed the plains together to seek their fortunes in the land of gold. At St. Joseph, Mo they both hired to a company who had undertaken to establish a stage line and mail route as far as Denver.

...In February, 1895, he was married to Mrs. Amelia Barnes of Columbus Junction, and they established a pleasant home in this place.

...In 1887 he returned to Iowa, and few persons absent from their early home for nearly 30 years ever found so warm a welcome.

...The pall bearers were W.H. Hilton, Jas. H. and Noah Letts, Dr, Brown and C.M. Fulton. The K.P. lodge attended in a body and conducted the services at the grave.

Relatives from away who attended H.D. Gelatt's funeral yesterday were Mrs. Judge McCrary, Kansas City, Wallace Gelatt, Mrs. Clayton and Mrs. Welsh, Chicago; Mr. And Mrs. Frank Brockway, Iowa City, Mrs. Lizzie Brockway and family, Cone, Miss Mary Brockway, Ainsworth, Mr. And Mrs. J.R. and J.H. and Noah Letts of Letts.
