Degree in 1938. He worked in Fort Smith and Little Rock before going into the
United States Navy. He was in active service from 1942 to 1945 as a Lieutenant/Fighter Director
Officer in the Pacific Theater in World War II.
After his naval service he came to Pine Bluff and practiced architecture with Mitchell Selligman from 1945 to 1954. James P. Willis joined this local architectural firm in 1955, and Willard R. Burks in 1967 when the firm became Reed, Willis, and Burks. In 1980, his son, Frederick H. Reed, also joined the firm and the firm continues today as the Reed Architectural Firm.
His firm had a part in the major construction projects in Pine Bluff, including the Pine Bluff Convention Center, the Jefferson County Courthouse which they did exclusively, and the Pine Bluff Civic Center, which they did in conjunction with Edward Durell Stone, an internationally known architect.
Mr. Reed enjoyed boating and was actively involved in the United States Power Squadron on the district and local level, teaching boating safety and piloting while mastering courses to the level of Navigator. He was an active member of Lakeside United Methodist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees, the Finance Committee, and several terms on the Administrative Board. He was Past Chairman of the Pine Bluff Planning Commission, a member of the Pine Bluff Rotary Club, and a member of the American Institute of Architects.
He was also preceded in death in 1982 by his first wife, Margaret Westall Reed, and by his brother, Frank Augustus Reed, and half-sister, Flora Whittaker.
His survivors include his wife, Sue Cathey Railsback Reed, to whom he was married May 7, 1983 in Pine Bluff; three sons, Don A. Reed, Jr. of Dallas, Texas, Roderick D. Reed of Vero Beach, Florida, and Frederick H. Reed of Pine Bluff; step-son, Thomas C. Railsback, Jr. of Pine Bluff; step-daughter, Rebecca R. Phillips of Pine Bluff; half-sister, June Whittaker Copeland of El Dorado, Kansas; seven grandchildren, D. Ashley Reed, III of Frisco, Texas, Allison M. Hickman of Charlotte, NC, Claiborne Gist Reed of Fayetteville, AR, Lydia Arden Reed of Vero Beach, FL, Harrison Raley Reed and Mary-Margaret Reed of Fayetteville, AR, Joanna Elizabeth Reed of Pine Bluff; two step-grandchildren, Charles Taylor Phillips and Earle Wardon Phillips of Pine Bluff, AR, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, January 30, 2004, at 10:00 AM at Lakeside United Methodist Church with Reverend George Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery by Ralph Robinson & Son. Memorials suggested to Lakeside United Methodist Church.
