Leendert “Leo” Dorst’s cremated remains were never taken after his death and are still available at Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related. While his death certificate incorrectly refers to him as Cornelis Dorst, the Oregon list of unclaimed cremains correctly shows his name was Leendert Dorst. Among his family he went by Leo.

His parents were Wilhelmina Dorothea Sunderman and Cornelis Dorst who were both native of the Netherlands. Leo who was born in 1905, was their oldest child and was also born the Netherlands. They had another son named Cornelis, Jr. (born about 1909).

Leo’s siblings included Petronella “Nellie” (born in 1907), Cornelis, Jr. (1909), Wilhelmus "William" (1910), Catherina “Rena” (1912) and Isaak “John” Leonard (1919). Except for John who was born in Canada, all the older children were born in Holland.

Their father immigrated from Holland to Canada in 1912 and the rest of the family followed in
July 1915 aboard the SS Nieuw Amsterdam leaving from Rotterdam. They were Lutherans and their primary language was Dutch. During the Canadian census of 1916, the Dorst family was living in Strathcona, Alberta, Canada. They moved to Portland, Oregon in 1923.

Leo’s mother died in Portland on 12/20/1924 at the age of 45. She was buried at the Rose City Cemetery in Portland. In the Portland City Directory Leo was always shown living in his father’s home. After his mother’s death they lived at 195 E. 92nd N, Portland. In 1925 Leo was listed as a machinist. However in 1924, 1929 & 1930 no occupation was listed for him unlike the others in the family whose directory listing showed occupations.

Leo never married and stopped appearing in the Portland City directories after 1930. By the time of the April 1930 census, when he was about 25, Leo had been admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. He was diagnosed with dementia praecox (premature dementia) which was later called schizophrenia. It is a chronic, deteriorating psychotic disorder characterized by rapid cognitive disintegration, usually beginning in the late teens or early adulthood.

During the censuses of 1930 and 1940 Leo was listed as “Cornelis Dorst” as a patient at the state hospital. He was single and his birth year was said to be 1907 or 1908. Meanwhile in the censuses of 1930 & 1940, his brother Cornelis, Jr. was living with his wife in Portland where he was a teamster for a department store. After living at the institution for over 10 years, Leo died there of tuberculosis on 1/4/1941.

Leo’s father died on 6/2/1948 and was buried at Rose City Cemetery. Cornelis, Jr. and his wife Kathryn Brennon had at least one child. Cornelis died in 1997 in California. Sister Nellie moved out of the family home by 1924 and worked as an elevator operator. She married Dean Holt and they had several children. She died before 2000. Leo’s brother William had at least 3 children. He died in 2000 in Coos Bay, Oregon. Sister Rena married Harold Cameron. They had at least 3 children. Rena died in 2004 in California. Brother Isaak John Leonard Dorst died in Portland in 2005. He was survived by two sons.
