US Congressman. Born in Pilesgrove Township, New Jersey, he rose to prominence in the community as a merchant. He was elected to the New Jersey State Legislature in 1843, serving a one year term. In 1844 he was elected as Justice of the Peace, serving until 1847 in that office. He was then elected as a Democrat to represent New Jersey's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1851 to 1855. After he left office he pursued various business concerns, served a term as New Jersey State Tax Commissioner, served as a trustee of the New Jersey State Reform School for Boys at Jamesburg, New Jersey, and unsuccessfully ran again for Congress in 1880.
