Mr. Conaway was born May 9, 1931, in Tifton, Ga., to Henry Grady Conaway and Florene Marchant Conaway. He served for four years with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, receiving the Medal of Valor. He then joined the United States Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War, receiving a Purple Heart, and retiring after 23 years of service. After retirement from the Air Force in 1976, the Conaways moved to Brunswick, where Mr. Conaway began working at FLETC as a radio and audio technician. He retired from FLETC in 1999. Mr. Conaway enjoyed hunting, astronomy and competitive archery, for which he won numerous trophies.
Survivors include his children, Carl G. Conaway Jr. (Tracy) of Darien and Syndie Conaway (Joe) of Brunswick; sisters, Mary Spell of Brunswick and Linda Hunt of Longwood, Fla.; five grandchildren, Matthew Tyre (Jennifer), Brandice Choi (Bruce), Brian Acree, Amanda Conawa and Colby Brooks; six great-grandchildren, Dorian Mitchell, Anthony Abato, Evin Zakrzewski, Corey Tyre, Cassidy Tyre and Callie Conaway.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Susie Hope Conaway; a daughter, Darette Acree; and a sister, Darette Harper.
