U.S. Congressman. After graduating from the New York University Law School in 1873, he was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in New York City. He also became successful in real estate investment and finance. In 1879, he inherited from his uncle Commodore Uriah P. Levy, "Monticello'' the former estate of the 3rd U.S. President Thomas Jefferson. Levy spent hundreds of thousands of dollars repairing, restoring and preserving Monticello, for America's national historic value. As the leader of the New York Democratic Party, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth Congress, serving (1899-1901. He was again elected to the Sixty-second and Sixty-third Congresses, serving (1911-15). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and his former business interests until his death.
