Leslie C. Watson was born in Wyoming, county, New York, March 21st, 1850, and died at his home in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, June 12th, 1911. In 1853 the family moved to Jackson county Iowa and settled on a farm eight miles west of Maquoketa, where he grew to manhood. After completing his education, he taught school in the neighborhood for about six years. On April 20, 1875, he was united in marriage to Alice Elwood, of Elwood Iowa. To this union were born five children, four of whom, with the wife survive him and were present at his bedside when death came: Mrs. B. A. Davis of Elwood, J. R. Watson of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Eva Eno and Miss Percey Watson of Mt. Vernon, Clarence the oldest children having died in Infancy. Besides the wife and children, five grandchildren and one brother, E. D. Watson, of Kansas, and many other relatives and friends remain to mourn his loss. Mr. Watson was converted in 1887, at the age of 37, and became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church To the vows taken at that time he has ever been faithful. He was a regular attendant at the church service, even to within three weeks of his death, and during nearly all that time held some official position in the church. Mr. Watson has left to his family the memory of a gentle, just and unselfish life, given to the following of high ideals, simple and without demonstration. With him to see a duty was to do it. Thoughtfulness for others was ever noticeable, especially during the last few months of his life, when he feared that those who cared for him might be wearied and overtaxed. He was willing, even anxious, to go, and seemed to look forward to a fuller, more perfect life beyond. To such as these, who have lived for others and who wished no ill to any man, there is no sting in death. - Mount Vernon Hawk-Eye.
