"IRAN O'NEAL WESTBROOK--An outstanding figure in the business progress of Blytheville, Arkansas, for many year was the late Ira O'Neal Westbrook, landowner, manufacturer of boxes and crates for butter and ice cream, and man of diversified business interests.
Ira O'Neal Westbrook was born in Jackson, Mississippi, March 20, 1864, son of Dr. Patrick H. Westbrook and his wife, Mary P. Westbrook. The son attended grammar and high school and studied at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. For twenty years he was manager of this manufacturing company, and during this long period was also engaged in the insurance and brokerage business. He was also owner of a general store which ably served the needs of the community. His energy and enterprise took in other financial fields, such as a substantial interest in the Star and Durant Autombile Agency in Blytheville. All his property was disposed of at his death except the farm lands, which Mrs. Westbrook has contined to supervise the rental of, residing in her home at No. 819 Ash Street, Blytheville.
A Democrat in politics, Mr. Westbrook gave his vote to the man and the measure which proved to be most promising for Blytheville. He was a communicant of the Christian Church.
Ira O'Neal Westbrook married, August 22, 1897, at Halls, Tennessee, Euvalah BRONDIN, , daughter of Sidney C. and Martha J. Brondin. Her father had a dramatic career as a volunteer from Tennessee in the Civil War, participating in the Battle of Chickamaugua, where he was shot through the lung and left on the battlefield for dead; later he was found to be alive and was taken to the hospital, where he recovered sufficiently to rejoin his company and fight throughout the rest of the war. He was a famer and lumberman in Arkansas. To Mr. and Mrs. Westbrook were born the following children: Mattie; Wilkins H.; Eula M.; and Ira O'Neal, Jr.
The death of Mr. Westbrook occurred on September 2, 1926, when he was only sixty-two years old, and was a great loss to the community. To his wife and family he was devoted husband and father, kindly, wise, loving, and he carried the same qualities into his many friendships. His energetic and resourceful life and business activites played a very real part in developing and building up the business life of Blytheville."
