Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches;
In the winter months of 1975, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Salls donated several cattle to the Youth Ranches and, later, promised to give their large home and land. With a few minor renovations to the Salls' residence, the first cottage was ready to accept siblings in August of 1978.
HOW WAS THE YOUTH RANCH/SAFETY HARBOR CONCEIVED?
A facility like the Youth Ranch had been in planning for several years, but the first real opportunity came in 1975, when a generous Clearwater couple (Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Salls) offered their large home and some surrounding property for the development of a Youth Ranch. The offer was gratefully accepted and some additional adjacent property was purchased at a discount price. As soon as the Salls had vacated their home, it was converted into a residence for ten children and their cottage parents. As mentioned previously, the Youth Ranch accepted its first children in August, 1978.
