Larry Meacham Rhye, 73, of Charleston, S.C., formerly of Mooresville, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006. Larry was born Sept. 24, 1932 in Rockingham.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Meacham Rhye Ingram, stepfather, Stancil Clyde Ingram and aunt, Ethel Cummins. He is survived by his wife, Betty Rogers Rhye; sons, Terrell Rhye and Ken Rhye and wife, Cindy Kay; grandchildren Brett, Amber, Iain, and Avery, all of Charleston, S.C. and cousin, Roma Cummins Smith of Virginia Beach, Va.
Larry and Betty were married for 52 years and were united in marriage by Rev. Norman Morgan of Mooresville. Larry volunteered for 12 years at Genesis ElderCare telling stories of earlier years in Mooresville to the residents. He also volunteered his time at Summit Place every Sunday taking part in a worship service for the residents.
Larry was an active member at First Baptist Church in Mooresville. He was a deacon, taught the senior adult Sunday School Class, and took part in mission trips with the church helping rebuild homes in the eastern part of the state and in Mississippi after Katrina.
Larry was active in the community, serving as an Iredell County Commissioner and chairman of the Mitchell Community College Board of Trustees. He also was chairman of the Mooresville Planning Board and served as a Governor appointee on the N.C. Liability Insurance Commission.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at First Baptist Church in Mooresville with Dr. Jim Royston officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Mooresville Building Fund, 150 South Church St. Mooresville, NC 28115.
