Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a mounted policeman, James Francis Aloysius McIntyre was supported in his early years through a small dressmaking business opened by his mother after his father sustained serious injuries upon falling off his horse, which accident left him invalidated. The death of his mother in 1896, led him to move along with his father to a cousin of his. Finding employment with the H.L. Horton and Company, an investment house on the New York Stock Exchange, he took night courses at New York City College and Columbia and following the demise of his father in 1915, entered the preparatory seminary in Dunwoodie. Ordained priest for the archdiocese of New York on May 21, 1921 by Cardinal Patrick Hayes, he was soon named assistant pastor of Saint Gabriel's Church in the Lower East Side, a position he held until 1923, when he was appointed assistant chancellor for the archdiocese of New York. Promoted to chancellor in 1934, he was named privy chamberlain of His Holiness on December 27 of that year and appointed domestic prelate by Pope Pius XI on November 12, 1936. Appointed auxiliary bishop of New York by the latter Pontiff on November 16, 1940, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Cyrene on January 8 of the following year, from Cardinal Francis Spellman, Archbishop of New York. Named vicar general of the archdiocese on January 27, 1945, eighteen months later, on July 20, 1946, Pope Pius XII appointed him coadjutor archbishop of New York raising him to the titular archbishopric see of Paltus. On February 7, 1948, Msgr. McIntyre was transferred to Los Angeles as the second archbishop of the local metropolitan see. Shortly after his installation, he set about to reorganize the archdiocesan curia, erecting a new chancery and refurbishing St. Vibiana's Cathedral. Elevated to the Sacred College of Cardinals with the title of Sant'Anastasia by Pope Pius XII in the consistory of January 12, 1953, undoubtedly Cardinal McIntyre's greatest contribution was his program for expanding Catholic educational facilities. In the first fifteen years of his tenure, Catholic schools tripled from 141 to 347, an average of one a month. Retiring from the pastoral government of his see on January 21, 1970, he went on to serve as a parish priest at St. Basil's church in Downtown Los Angeles, where he privately celebrated the Tridentine Mass on its side altars. Known as an arch-conservative man, during his term in office he ran in disputes with clergy and religious of a liberal bent. Hailed as the "Aknowledged Elder Statesman of the American Hierarchy", the tall, stern-looking Cardinal passed away at the age of ninety three at the St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles and was laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles. In 2003, his remains were transferred to the crypt of the new Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
