Hattie was one of 4 children born to Samuel Baxter McEwen and Orinda Sophia (Boardman) McEwen in Youngstown, Ohio. The family moved to Wisconsin in about 1850. She married Dr. Frederick Butler Righter of Ohio in 1866. She and Frederick had 3 sons and one daughter: Charles B., Edward J., Frederick B. and Alice L. The family lived for awhile in Monroe, Wisconsin but moved to Lancaster County, Nebraska in about 1880, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Her husband preceded her in death on April 18, 1914.
