He went to work with the Clarion-Ledger, a Jackson newspaper, in 1948, and was a veteran of 15 years with the paper at the time of his death in an automobile accident. He was returning from covering a story when the accident occurred. Nell, the daughter of Thomas Earley and Bonnie Dickson Allen of Clarksville, Texas, is a claims examiner with Veteran's Administration in Jackson. She and the younger children lived in Jackson, Mississippi, USA as of 1978.
