Leah was born to Maude Evelyn Kepner and Ross Durose Hodgkinson. When she was very young her parents divorced and Maude and Leah moved to Spirit Lake, Iowa, where Leah's Grandfather worked. Her Mother remarried and Leah was raised in Spirit Lake by Maude and her stepfather Andrew Martin Johnson Sr., who adopted her.
Leah attended the University of Iowa where she met Paul Chandler Smith. Upon his graduation they were married and moved to Rock Rapids where Paul published the family newspaper, the Lyon County Reporter, with his father Willis "Gay" Smith. Leah loved to write and wrote a weekly column called "Through the Sun Room Window".
