Lt. Don Strate, DSN 2214, was commissioned as a Police Officer on 02/02/1954. He left the department on 07/09/1963 for the private sector and returned to the department on 05/03/1965. While he was on the department he was awarded 1 department Letter of Commendation, and 2 department Awards of Excellence. When he retired on 02/08/1989 he has a total of 35.02 years of service with the department. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served from 01/01/1951 to 01/01/1952 attaining the rank of E-1.

Strate, Donald E. 79, of St. Louis, passed away Monday May 9, 2011 in the comfort of his home. He was born September 7, 1931 in St. Louis, Missouri the son of the late Henry W. Strate and Virginia (nee Herrin) Strate Ennis.

He attended Roosevelt High School and after graduation served in the U.S. Navy. On December 5, 1953 he was united in marriage to the late Patricia A. (nee Wodecker) Strate.

On August 30, 1986 he was united in marriage to Mary (nee Stockman) Lueckenotte, who survives at their home.

Don began his law enforcement career with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department in February 1954, walking a beat in his old neighborhood in south St. Louis. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant after a 35 year career, in February 1989.

Don graduated from Maryville University, attended the FBI National Academy in 1979 and was a member of Elks Lodge #2035, Eagles Lodge #2693, American Legion Post 187, FBI National Academy and numerous other organizations. After retirement Don served on the Governor's Citizens Advisory on Corrections, Taught at Forest Park Community College and worked for a German firm as an advisor in Nefteyugansk, Siberia. He also served as a Trustee to the Police Retirement System of St. Louis.

He is survived by three children: Donna (Lawrence) Holmes, Jean (Bill) Burlingame and Jon (Diane) Strate and three step- children: Tim (Sarah) , Randy (Kelly) and Darian (Amy) Lueckenotte , two grandchildren: Justin and Kelsey and seven step- grandchildren: Alicia, Lauren, Dylan, Sydney, Nathan, Seth, and Wade and one step great grandchild Jayce.

Services: Funeral at KUTIS SOUTH COUNTY Chapel 5255 Lemay Ferry Rd. (at Butler Hill) Fri. May 13 at 10am. Interment J.B. National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials to Backstoppers, Vogelweid Learning Center or Leukemia and Lymphoma Society appreciated. Visitation Thursday, 3-9 p.m.
