Paul Hoppe, 85, of Le Mars, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at his home in Le Mars.

Paul Hoppe was born May 10, 1925, in Edwardsville, Ill., the son of Joe and Bertha (Metz) Hoppe. He attended school in Edwardsville, Ill. As a teenager, he moved to Le Mars, Iowa to live with his brother, Ed. He helped on his farm until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1943. He served his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Paul was united in marriage to Dorothy (Berkenpas) Falk on June 25, 1946 in Le Mars. They farmed near Le Mars, raising crops and livestock. After retiring, they continued to live on the farm until 2008, when they moved to Le Mars. Dorothy died Nov. 25, 2009, in Le Mars.

Paul was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars.

One of Paul's greatest joys was woodworking, making just about anything out of wood, including furniture. He also enjoyed playing cards, gardening, and having coffee with his good friends, Charlie and Suzie Eufers.

But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his four children: Robert Falk and his wife, Dorothy of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mary Meyers and her husband, Glenn of Loomis, Calif., Dan Hoppe and his wife, Jana of Le Mars, and Doug Hoppe and his wife, Colleen of Le Mars; eight grandchildren: Jeff Falk and his wife, Angela of Mesa, Ariz., Teresa Trout and her husband, Lewis of Mesa, Ariz., Jason Falk and his wife, Hettie of Phoenix, Ariz., Josh Meyers of Rocklin, Calif., Jana Finarelli and her husband, Nick of Santa Rosa, Calif., Chad Hoppe and his wife, Jill of Le Mars, Tyler Hoppe and his wife, Stephanie of Le Mars, and Justin Hoppe and his wife, Linette of Theodore, Ala.; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Edith Renken of Le Mars; special friends, Charlie and Suzie Eufers, and Carol Rutten, all of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; a grandson: Christopher Hoppe; five brothers: Clarence, Leo, Frederick, Theodore, and Ed; and three sisters: Tillie, Mary, and Clara.

Prayer service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness will officiate. The body has been cremated. Visitation with the family present will be from 5 p.m. until the service time Thursday at the funeral home. Private family inurnment will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens in Le Mars with military rites conducted by the Heeren-McHale-Wilken American Legion Post 724 of Brunsville. Marcia Young, A.i.M. will officiate.
