Grandley was the second of seven children of Philaster Buell and Lucy Case.

He was married to Mary, daughter of Norman Dewey and Susan (Allen) Perry, who survived him.

During the Civil War, Grandley served in two units in the Union Army: in Company B, 48th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was transferred in 1865 to Company B, 83rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. he served with his brother Philaster, and three brothers-in-law.
