Scrapbook Clipping dated March 1945 - Columbus Junction - Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Cassabaum, Columbus Junction, received a telegram from the war department late Monday that their son John W. Cassabaum, 21, an instructor in the naval air field at Kingsfield, Texas was killed while on duty. He entered the service in September 1942, trained at Muscatine, Iowa City, Glenview Ill., and Atlanta, Ga., and received his wings in August 1943 at Corpus Christie, Texas. He served as an instructor there at at Kingsfield. He was born here Dec. 8, 1923, and graduated from Columbus High School in 1940. His parents, two brothers, Gary and Robert, at home, and two sisters, Mary at Arlington, Va., and Betty at Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, survive.
