Silas Ritz was born on Wednesday, February 9, 1921, in Remsen, IA, the son of John and Margaret (Loutsch) Ritz.

Silas attended Remsen St. Mary's School.

Silas was a member of the US Army National Guard in LeMars, IA; he enlisted with old Company K, but received a medical discharge. He enlisted again, but was medically discharged again.

Silas was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

On December 1, 1943, Silas was operating a tractor-powered corn-picking machine on the farm of his brother Eddie, southwest of Remsen. Eddie had only a few acres of corn to pick, and Silas volunteered to help for one day. Silas drove the tractor, while Eddie and his young son Larry followed with the corn wagon. Silas' clothing became caught in the power drive. Eddie was not aware of the tragedy when it occurred and thought Silas either fell or stepped off the tractor while it remained in motion. The machinery was stopped, and Eddie rushed to Silas' aid, the latter walking with him about 100 feet, when he collapsed.

Silas was rushed to LeMars (IA) Sacred Heart Hospital, where surgeons worked quickly on the severe body injuries. It appeared Silas would recover, and his parents and other assembled family members went home. However, he had a relapse and died suddenly in the hospital at 9:00 p.m. that night.

Silas never married and had no children.

Silas, 22 years old, died on Wednesday, December 1, 1943. The funeral Mass was said at Remsen St. Mary's Catholic Church on Saturday, December 4. Military honors at the burial service were provided by members of the American Legion and the VFW and auxiliary.
