Enlisted as a Private on December 30, 1863 in Marion Co., IA, at the age of 31. Joined Co. G, 40th Iowa Infantry Regiment on January 19, 1864. Severely wounded and taken prisoner by Confederate forces on April 30, 1864 at Jenkin's Ferry, AR. Died of disease as a POW on October 31, 1864 at Tyler, TX.
