Richard, the son of O'vila Gilbert (deceased) and Fernande Couture Gilbert Palmer, the brother of John Gilbert of Lawrence MA enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 29, 1965 in Boston MA. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

While OPCON (Operational Control) of the 1st Battalion during combat patrol south east of Hill 26 in Hieu Duc District, Cpl Gilbert was on point of the squad. A wire was tripped detonating an unknown type of AP (Anti-Personnel) mine resulting in his death as a result of multi fragmentation wounds and wounding another member of the patrol.

Lawrence Man Killed In Vietnam

A 19 – year – old Lawrence serviceman was killed Saturday in vicinity of Quang Nam Vietnam.

Dead is Cpl. Richard J. Gilbert, 31 Eutaw St., son of John and Fernande (Couture) Palmer, who arrived in Southeast Asia last October.

Prior to his enlistment in June, 1965 he was employed as a truck driver for Meisner's Poultry Farm, Methuen. He was born in Lawrence, attended St Anne's Church and was graduated from the Oliver Grammer and Lawrence High Schools.

Besides his parents he leaves two brothers, John Gilbert of Fall River and Donald Gilbert of Lawrence; a sister, Miss Charlene M. Gilbert, also of this city; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Marionne Couture of Lawrence; also several aunts and uncles.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending arrival of the body.
