Mary Ann "Polly" Clarkston was born on 2 October 1845 or 17 March 1847 in Lee County, Virginia, to James Madison Clarkston and Mary A Morris. She married Isaac Witt, 24 August 1864, when she was about seventeen years old, in Harlan County, Kentucky. The Clark(ston) and Witt families were intertwined, as there were several marriages between the two. Isaac and Polly's children were James, Archibald, Henry, Edmond, John, Martha, Mary, General, and Lura Witt. Isaac enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War. The Witt family appeared on the 1870 Census in the Yokum Station District of Lee County. Together with the other Witt families, they left the Crab Orchard / Big Stone Gap area of Virginia, a Confederate stronghold. Isaac and Polly appeared on the 1880 Census in Leslie County, Kentucky. In 1882, the Witt families left Kentucky for Arkansas. The men traveled by covered wagons; the women and children followed later by train. Isaac and Polly appeared on the 1900 Census at Richland Township, Arkansas. Polly was widowed when Isaac died, around 1905. She appeared on the Census of 1910, 1920, and 1930 at the home of her youngest daughter. They lived in Logan County, Arkansas, then Yell County, Arkansas, and finally in Cotton County, Oklahoma. Polly Clarkston Witt died, 20 October 1935, about age 90, in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, and was buried at Smith Cemetery in Havana, Arkansas.
