Asa Emery, 63, blacksmith, of Harrison Twp., Henry County, Ohio, died Saturday, August 7th.

He is survived by his wife Betsey, daughters Phillyra (Rufus) Emery of Plymouth, Richland County, Ohio, and Florence (Leander) Stanton of Defiance, Henry County, sons Alphonso of Northport, Leelanau County, Michigan, and Angelo (Elizabeth) of Harrison Twp. He is also survived by his brother Levi of Montville Twp., Waldo County, Maine and half-brother Stillman (Mary) of Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, sister-in-law Ann Keen of Harrison Twp., 6 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Nathaniel, mother Lucy, step-mother Barbara, sisters Anna (Isaac) Hall, Elona (David) Packard and half-sister Olive, brothers Tristram and Thomas, daughters Adelaide, Ophelia and Volney, and son Lorrain as a result of the War between the States, and three grandchildren. As of this writing this writer does not know the whereabouts of the daughter Vibilia born in Montville, Maine in 1830.

Asa, born August, 1806, was the sixth of eight children born to Nathaniel and Lucy (Crockett) Emery. He married Betsey Keen in Maine and on August 12, 1844, with the urging from his brother Tristram's letter of March 14, 1840, set out with his family for the rugged wilderness of Ohio. They settled first near Adams Twp., Seneca County, Ohio and then in 1847 moved to their present homestead in Harrison Twp, Henry County.

Services were held at the residence. Burial took place in Hoy Cemetery, Shunk.

Update: Daughter Vibilia was found in the 1860 census married to William Beckett, living in the Village of Hillsdale, in the County of Hillsdale, State of Michigan, with two children.

Inscription

The Emery book shows Asa born on Aug. 29, 1806 and his stone shows him passing on Aug. 7, 1869, but it doesn't compute to be 63 Y's, 1 Mo, 21 D.s as shown on his stone.
