Spencer enlisted as a Quarter Master in WWI. He was only in one month when he took pneumonia (or influenza) and died in Jacksonville, Florida while waiting to be shipped overseas. His body was sent home to Muskogee, Oklahoma and buried there. His funeral was attended by the Masons. The Oddfellows set-up a tombstone. His wife was buried there beside him a few years later. They left a son. Spencer was 51 when he died.
