Carol Lee Willard Barfield, 76, Norman, died Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Norman Regional Hospital. Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the St. John's Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in the IOOF cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of John Ireland Funeral Home. She was born March 4, 1930, to Dr. D.G. "Mike" Willard and Vera Louise Griffin Willard, life-long residents of Norman. She is also the granddaughter of Dr. David Griffin and Flora Mae Phelps Griffin. Dr. Griffin was the founder and first director of Griffin Memorial Hospital. She graduated from Norman High School and attended the University of Oklahoma where she majored in physical education. She was member of the Phi Beta Pi sorority and the Ducks' Swim Team. While attending OU she married Oliver E. Barfield of Amarillo. They moved to Amarillo and raised their four children. Mrs. Barfield returned to Norman in 1974 and worked at Griffin Memorial Hospital. As the activities director of the Outreach Program, her 20 years of work with Transition House clients reflected her compassion and dedication to the many lives she touched. She was involved in Norman's drug and alcohol community as a certified substance abuse counselor and active in helping people with addictions and recovery. She was also a friend of Bill W. She often brought her grandchildren to St. John's Episcopal Church on Sundays where she and her family had been life-long members. She was a docent at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History. She swam several times a week at the YMCA. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, family said. She was a great "little buddy." She was preceded in death by her father D.G. Willard and mother Vera Louise Griffin Willard; and her brother Gordon G. Willard of St. Louis. Survivors include her children Cdr. Oliver Eakle Barfield Jr. USN (ret) and his wife Susan of Luther, Mon., M. Phelps Barfield of Norman, Leigh Bell and her husband Richard of Norman, and Matthew Willard Barfield and his wife Alicia of Norman; grandchildren Capt. Zachary Bell USMC, presently stationed in Baghdad, Iraq, and his wife Melissa of San Diego, Lt. Oliver Eakle Barfield III USAF, stationed at Austin, Nicholas Barfield of Billings, Heather Barfield, Kenna Littlefield and Kale Littlefield of Norman; and two great-grandchildren, Hayley and Ashley Bell of Norman. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Norman Meals on Wheels or Norman United Way.
