Elizabeth “Eliza” Clanton Downs was born in 1860 in Bryan County, Georgia, the daughter of John Daniel Clanton and his second wife Ellen Ophelia Strickland Clanton. Eliza had six siblings and five half-siblings. She was the wife of blacksmith James Ainsworth Downs. She died at age 72 on January 12, 1932 in Chatham County, Georgia. Her death certificate lists her cause of death as “acute cardiac dilatation with contributory cause of myocarditis.” She is buried in an unmarked grave beside her husband at Little Creek Cemetery in Bryan County.

Her death certificate lists Little Creek Cemetery as the place of burial. Her name was Elizabeth, and she was called Eliza. The 1910 US Federal Census for Bryan County, Georgia lists her name as Elizabeth.
