Eugene Bennett Best, a resident of Portland, Oregon, died on Thursday, May 12, 2011. He was 81 years old.Eugene was born on October 13, 1929 in Lexington, Missouri to John and Mabel Best. He moved to Portland, Oregon as a young child with his family and he graduated from Benson High School in 1947. Following graduation Eugene served 4 years in the US Navy and then attended trade school where he studied as a sheet metal apprentice and continued to work as a Sheet Metal Journeyman for 20 years before retiring in 1971. On October 17, 1953 Eugene married Carole Anne Cosgrove at All Saints Catholic Church in Portland and had 8 children. He later moved his family to East County in 1969 and has been an active member of St. Joseph the worker catholic church for the past 25 years. Eugene enjoyed the beach, going to Reno, Las Vegas, and the Spirit Mountain Casino. He loved watching NASCAR, spending time with his family and his best friend Chico and was known for always wearing his suspenders.Eugene is survived by his wife of 57 years Carole Anne Best of Portland, OR; daughters Marijean Schiele of Milwaukie, OR, Julianne Titus of Mossy Rock, WA, Theresa Hollan of Portland, OR and Cathleen Markham of Eagle Creek, OR; sons Greg Best of Portland, OR, Robert Best of Damascus, OR, and John Best of Sandy, OR; brother Kenneth Best of San Gabriel, California and sister Juanita Schantz of Portland, OR as well as 14 grandchildren: Sarah, Evan, Jason, Josh, Angela, David, Conley, Eliot, Melissa, Lisa, Stone, Armay, William, and Amber and 7 great-grandchildren: Haley, Gavin, Seth, Rhian, Xavier, Tacen and Emilee. He was preceded in death by his son Daniel Best.A Funeral Service will take place on Friday May 20th at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church at 11:30 am. Viewing will be Thursday May 19th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home. Private Internment at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery. Contributions may be made in memory of Eugene to the Grotto or to mass intentions at St. Joseph the Worker. Arrangements entrusted to Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, Oregon.
