From writings by Emma Thompson Moe (1872-1966):
"THOMAS A. Ask was born February 4, 1809 and died October 23, 1889. He married Else Thrulson who was born December 14, 1811 and died February 22, 1898. They lived on the Ask farm until they lost most of it due to a depression. They saved a small place called "Vangen" and moved unto this to live as long as they remained in Norway. A few still retained the Ask name but most of the family now changed their name to Vangen. Thomas and Else later sold this farm and moved to the United States in 1860. They settled in Fillmore County in Minnesota. The children with the exception of two or three of the oldest accompanied their parents to America. The remaining ones followed later.

"After moving to America, the children agreed to use their father's name Thomas, changing it to Thompson for a surname. To Thomas and Else were born eight children, namely, Anders, Peter, Karen, Andreas, HANS, Maren, Ole and Anton."
