He was the son of John Wiley Purdom Sr. and Eleanor Clifford (Gilliland) Purdom. He fought in the Civil War in the 17th Tennessee Infantry, CSA. He signed an Oath of Allegance to the U.S. after the War, but was murdered by soldiers of the 42nd Missouri Volunteers (US) at the home of Julia Sanders, widow of William Sanders, in Franklin County, Tennessee.
