He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Mne Mead was killed by an Improvised Explosive Device during an operation to search a suspected bomb-factory compound in the Loy Mandeh Wadi area of Nad-e Ali (North) district of Helmand Province.

Aged 19, Dean was from Carmarthen, Wales. Mne Mead joined the marines in 2008 at age 17 and was the youngest to pass out of his troop. After completing training, he was involved in a number of high tempo and demanding tactical training exercises, including a 2 month amphibious deployment to the United States. He also enjoyed wider training activities such as mountain training and passed the long range rifle course. His commanding officer described him as young man with considerable inner strength, selfless, warm hearted. Although he was on his first tour of duty, he made an impression as a skilled marksman, utterly professional with enormous pride in his job. Known as "Deano" to his friends, he had a great sense of humour and endless enthusiasm for life with the corps.

Mne Mead leaves behind his mother Amanda Jones, father Philip, younger sister Jessica, grandparents, other relatives and many friends. His mother called her son "one in a hundred million". His father said, "Our Dean, our boy, our little Big Man, our hero always wanted to be a Royal Marine and he turned out to be one of the best". His sister said, "You found the silver lining in everything you did, you had such a carefree spirit. You always told me to live my life to the full every day no matter what risk it may hold because tomorrow could be my last. You told me you never wanted to grow old because you wanted a young life forever. You are my big brother, my hero and you will have that young life forever captured in the wonderful photographs you have left behind for me."

Funeral with full military honours was held on June 2, 2011 at St Peter's Church, Carmarthen.
