"Elizabeth Hart Porter, 88, of Auburndale, Fla., formerly of Port Charlotte, Fla., and La Plata, Md., died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Auburndale Oaks LTC Facility in Auburndale.
She was born April 18, 1915, in Baltimore, Md., and was the daughter of Ira T. Collester[sic] and Marie Reier Collester[sic]. She was a longtime resident of La Plata and moved to Port Charlotte in the mid-1980s after her retirement from the Charles County Public Library. She studied at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., and volunteered as the pianist for the La Plata High School Glee Club for many years. In Port Charlotte, she was a member of the Punta Gorda Country Club, where she played golf with the Nifty Niners. She also was an Elkette in the Elks Lodge Punta Gorda 2606.
She is survived by her son, Waring Franklin Hart of Pearland, Texas; daughters, Susan Hart Murphy of Seabrook Island, S.C., and Barbara Hart Caldwell Salman of New Orleans, La.; sister, Ruth Callister Newell of Saratoga, Calif.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Ann Hart Harris of Port Charlotte and Katherine Hart of Lynchburg, Va. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband.
Visitation was held on Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Christ Episcopal Church in La Plata. The Rev. Joseph Trigg officiated. Burial took place at Mount Rest Cemetery in La Plata.
Memorial contributions may be made to Charles County Public Library, E. Charles St., La Plata, MD 20646.
