Virgil Don Simonton, 88, of Gillespie died Friday, May 6, 2011, at 8:20 p.m. in Heritage Manor in Gillespie.

Graveside funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, May 10, at 2 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery, Litchfield. The Rev. Tim Shrader will officiate. No visitation is scheduled; the Plummer Funeral home of Litchfield is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Simonton was born in Keyesport on April 27, 1923, to William and Almedia (Goodin) Simonton. One of 13 children, he served four years in the Navy during WWII. A member of VFW Post #4547 in Gillespie, he worked as an electrician for Olin-Matheson in East Alton for 27 years.

He and Betty Lou Young were married on Aug. 9, 1945, and she survives in Gillespie. Also surviving are one daughter, Jole (husband Werner) Henze of Grain Valley, MO; one brother, Charlie Simonton of Taylor Springs; one sister, Letha Schoen of Gillespie, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, William "Buck," Frank, and Howard "Babe" Simonton; and seven sisters, Lois Ecker, Lola Obertino, Farrel Cranford, Edith Childers, Gloria Fontana, Dixie Miller, and Murl Harnetiaux.

The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Association.
